Abstract :
Problems in the (lack of) theory of RS and GIS are summarised and a model based approach proposed. A theory of geoinformatics in 4D is formulated which defines relations between entities in space and time in a top down manner for handling 4D world models, including information quality. A subtheory for image analysis replaces attempts to imitate the behaviour of image interpreters. It contains additional knowledge about RS and updates models in the 4 dimensional GIS
