Abstract :
Project ENDEAVOR (Booij et al., 1999) (Environment for Design of Advanced Marine Vehicles and Operations Research) has devised a unique capability to support advanced marine vehicles (AMVs) in the areas of mission planning, design, and performance analysis. The Project has established an 8-year global NOAA WaveWatch III (WWIII) deepwater condition database to feed the Simulation of Waves Nearshore (SWAN)2 regional wave model and LAMP (Large Amplitude Motions Program), a marine vehicle performance evaluation model. There are three driving requirements for this system: legacy application integration, distributed modeling architecture, and access to a high performance computing (HPC) environment. For tool integration and distribution, a novel visual programming and integration framework (Envision5) has been incorporated to build and publish the simulation and performance analysis models as Java Web services. For computational power, interfaces have been established that leverage the power of high performance computing to the user´s desktop. The output products of these services are useful to AMV operators and designers for examining vessel effectiveness, and to ocean engineers for assessing ocean environmental conditions prior to vehicle excursion time. This paper discusses project ENDEAVOR´S application to a case study involving a voyage simulation model for a 35 knot catamaran ferry operating in Hawaiian waters
