Abstract
Significant progress has been made in various applications of nanotechnology. This paper concentrates on far-reaching research in three-dimensional nanoelectronics and nanoICs. The rapid miniaturization of electronics to nanoscale has been a key force, and nanoelectronics is the twenty first century frontier. Significant progress has been made over last few years in various applications of nanotechnology to nanoelectronics. In last years there have been significant advances in fabrication and demonstration of molecular wires, diode switches, single electron transistors, quantum dots, etc. However, fundamental and applied developments in three-dimensional (3D) nanoelectronics and nanoICs have been behind experimental research. Fabrication, testing and characterization of different nanodevices (carbon nanotube transistors and interconnects, silicon nanowires, molecular transistors, quantum dots and other) result in possible application them in three-dimensional nanoICs (3DnanoICs). We propose to design 3D nanoelectronic building blocks (3DnanoBB), and illustrate their application in crossbar nanoICs. Using distinct 3DnanoBB and 3DnanoFabrics, functional 3DnanoICs and memory arrays can be designed applying the proposed nanoarchitectronics paradigm. In fact, one of the most promising directions that will lead to benchmarking progress are synthesis, design and analysis of super high-density three-dimensional nanoICs (Super3DnanoICs).
