  • Abstract
Research scientists and K – 12 science educators often possess different sets of skills, vocabularies and experiences, but they share the goal of developing a scientifically literate populace. In an effort to build partnerships and develop mutual understanding between researchers and teachers, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Office of Ocean Exploration (OE) funded the “Mountains in the Sea – Exploring the New England Seamount Chain,” a project providing opportunities for these communities to share the experience and process of scientific discovery. Evaluation data from scientists and educators as well as educator data from professional development workshops highlight both success and needs for improvement. While lesson plans and activities are well received by educators, the need for opportunities to bring authentic, real world science into the classroom is apparent. Use of Web-based technologies to improve scientific relevance, awareness of oceanographic and stewardship issues, and knowledge of the current state of the oceans appears to be a valuable and feasible option for both researchers and educators. Additionally, technological goals for education/outreach should focus on improving communication among researchers, educators, and students, thereby nurturing student interests and the relevance of science. Results suggest that teacher-researcher collaborations, combined with appropriate professional development, provide the knowledge, confidence and resources necessary to better incorporate ocean sciences in the classroom.
