Abstract
Due to the growth of economy, electricity demands especially the peak power demands in the United State are expected to increase significantly in the next few decades. Since the infrastructure for the new capacity of generation, transmission, and distribution to satisfy this increasing demand is highly capital intensive, demand response, concerning about shifting or curtailing the electricity demand during peak periods with high cost, is thought to be a critical and inexpensive load management technique by both academia and industry. Compared with the studies in long-term production scheduling and planning to smooth out peaks and valleys of the electricity demand for manufacturing systems, research about real time electricity demand response under the constraints of system throughput is rare. In this paper, a heuristic method considering throughput bottleneck detection for real time demand response under the production constraint is introduced. The numerical case studies yield promising results which indicate the great potential and feasibility of reducing power demand during the peak period without negative impact on system throughput.
