Abstract :
By using a sea surface temperature profiler buoy, the behavior of the vertical temperature profile was observed in Mutsu Bay, Japan. In the daytime under clear and calm conditions in summer, there occurred a large temperature difference between the skin surface and 1 m depth of at most 5°C. The difference suddenly disappeared when the wind began to blow at more than 5 m/s. The sea surface effect must be a dominant error in satellite sea surface temperature estimation by IR methods
