Abstract :
Considers the position of dedicated data networks within the complex choice of telecommunications services now facing customers with mobile workforces. RAM Mobile Data Ltd. operates a national mobile data network in the UK, based on Ericsson´s `Mobitex´ technology which is now the de facto international standard for wireless data communications worldwide. Topics under discussion include the origins of mobile data, the creation of RAM´s Network in the UK and the network´s underlying technology. The driving forces behind mobile data, and some of the specific applications, also considered, ending with a look at the future evolution of new markets
