Abstract :
A theoretical study is performed on the method of sensing both the thickness and the vertical distribution of salt density in sea ice from the observed frequency dependence of the microwave reflection from the sea ice, where the distribution has a large influence on the strength of the sea ice. The key point of the method is how to solve a set of recursive equations which is derived from a model named the multi-layers model; this is described in terms of the dielectric constant in each layer as well as the thickness of each layer. An algorithm is proposed for solving the recursive equations. As a trial case, the algorithm is applied to reproduce two cases of salt density distributions in a lump of sea ice composed of two laminar layers. The result shows that the applicability is hopeful
