Abstract
The ETSI DECT specification describes a telecommunications system which provides facilities for both cordless speech and data. The first mass market acceptance of DECT products will be for telephony applications, for use in both the home and business. This paper aims to show how, in addition, data services can be provided by DECT and the performance that can be expected. The types of service that can be supported are discussed. For the home user and to a lesser extent the business user, these services will originate or terminate in the low bandwidth, analogue PSTN, although this may gradually be superseded by ISDN. The data rates to be supported will be restricted by the capacity of the PSTN and the available modem technology as well as by DECT: currently V.34 achieves a data rate of 28.8 kbps, this will be taken as the upper limit
