Abstract
Curtailment of renewable energy generation is an increasing concern in electric power systems. Due to transmission constraints and generator flexibility an increasing fraction of wind generation is curtailed. This decreases the environmental benefits of renewable energy while increasing their costs. Energy storage is one option to decrease renewable curtailment. This paper discusses how energy storage can be used to increase grid flexibility and reduce curtailment. It is also compared to other options on the flexibility supply curve for integrating variable generation.
