Abstract
One key objective for the design of GSM was to provide a system which would provide consistently reliable mobile communications, suitable for both speech and data. The author describes the technical functionality required in GSM to support data services. In particular this is: rate adaptation; radio link protocol; forward error correction; and layer 2 relay. Some examples are included of how Cellnet is presenting the technical capabilities to the market within packaged data products
