Abstract :
This paper describes use of advanced battery energy storage systems to support integration of wind generation with power systems. Two wind integration projects using A123 Systems´ proprietary Nanophosphate® lithium iron phosphate battery technology are described to provide examples of energy storage applied for wind integration. The first example is the Tehachapi Wind Energy Storage Project by Southern California Edison that will use an A123-built energy storage system to demonstrate use of storage deployed within an electrical network to support wind integration. The second example is use of A123-built energy storage systems to limit the power output ramp rate (MW/minute) of wind generators. The summary includes recommendations for continuing the expanded consideration and use of advanced energy storage as a contributing grid asset, including technical standards development.
