Summary form only given. The third generation “UMTS” will provide wideband multimedia capabilities over mobile communication networks realising a range of new and innovative services, including interactive video, Internet/intarnet and other high speed data services. This leading to cellular network architectures that are to deliver infinite applications and infinite content of cost-effective mobile non-voice and voice services. This means more IP-optimised network and a change from a voice oriented to a data oriented platform. Faced with unprecedented growth in data volumes, the cellular air interface standards will have to support the demands of data rates of 144 kbits per second, portable data rates of 384 kbits per second and in-building fixed rate of 2 Mbits per second using WB-CDMA and TD-CDMA
