  • Abstract
The authors present an intelligent tutoring system for a sonar application. The system provides assistance to the student that supports a rich learning interaction and that provides online control of student progress. Providing guidance to learners is an area where AI researchers and computer based training (CBT) researchers can both make vital contributions. The authors have used both technologies to build an intelligent tutoring system which supports a rich learning interaction. They have adopted a constructive view of learning which aims to encourage the learner to take the initiative by providing assistance and explanations, rather than directive tutoring. They use a task analysis approach and argue that it provides a suitable way of structuring knowledge during the learning process. It models both the student activity in a learning scenario and the reasoning process of the knowledge base system. This approach allows online control of student progress, which is used as a basis for providing assistance that is sensitive to the current student evaluation assessment
