Abstract
In both satellite and terrestrial environments, the data communication networks and the digital television networks are converging rapidly to enable secure and reliable multicasting and unicasting of data files and streams to both integrated receiver decoders (IRDs) and personal computers (PCs). This paper explores the different venues on the way to a robust data broadcasting product. A key new technology standard in this area is the digital video broadcasting (DVB) multi-protocol encapsulation standard. The paper compares and contrasts the DVB multi-protocol encapsulation standard to other data communication and broadcasting standards. It describes the technological details of this new standard, analyzes how reliability and security may be applied to this standard and explains how it can be used to implement the basic data communication services and enticing vertical applications
