Abstract
Function blocks are standardised process functions consisting of inputs, outputs and relevant parameters which execute a local algorithm that performs data acquisition, actuation and processing. Standardisation is necessary so that function blocks provided by different manufacturers present the same steady and transient behaviour which is a first step towards ensuring device interoperability. This paper presents joint work carried out by the University of Patras, Greece and the Institut fur Automation und Kommunikation, Germany, for the use and evaluation of the IEC 1499 language in combination with the IEC 1131-3, for function block definition
