  • Abstract
    This presentation will describe field experience in the implementation of the distributed state estimator. The distributed state estimator (or otherwise named the SuperCalibrator) extracts the dynamic real time model of an electric power system using phasor measurement unit (PMU) data (GPS-synchronized) and other SCADA data that are available in substations. The method utilizes frequency and rate of change of frequency data from the PMU as well as the voltage and current phasors. Such data are available in raw form, as time-stamped instantaneous values, or, in the case of voltages and currents, as computed phasor data at the system fundamental frequency. The methodology consists of fitting the available PMU and other measurements to the dynamic model of the system and therefore it is a dynamic distributed state estimator (DSE). Conceptually, the DSE is a filter that uses all available data to extract the transient swings of the system in real time. The distributed state estimator is in field demonstrations presently. One installation has been completed and three others are in progress. The involved utilities are USVI-WAPA, NYPA, PG&E and Southern Company. The paper will present the experiences with the field implementation of the distributed state estimator, performance data and representative results.
