            Abstract : 
We report the demonstration of an ultra-high modal gain of ~1000 dB/cm in a RE-doped waveguide amplifier, comparable to or even exceeding the modal gain reported for SOAs, thus paving the way for applications of on-chip integrated RE-doped amplifiers.
