Abstract :
High power electromagnetic (HPEM) transient phenomena have been defined in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the IEEE. Some of the typical threats considered include the electromagnetic fields from near lightning encounters, from electrostatic discharges, from radio transmitters, and from radars to mention a few. In addition, there are electromagnetic threats produced by nuclear explosions (especially from high-altitude bursts - HEMP) and from electromagnetic weapons that are intended to produce purposeful interference to electronic equipment with criminal or terrorist intentions (IEMI). This paper will review the different types of HPEM threats to electronic systems and will summarize the effects underway in the IEC to protect against them.
