Abstract :
The topic of GIS (geographic information system) has received little attention in most business schools. We introduce the concept of GIS, emphasizing and providing some examples of the relatively simple, PC-based, high value-added applications that account for the recent explosive growth in GIS business applications. The ability to display information geographically is an important source of the benefits of many of these applications. We then discuss GIS as a research area for business school faculty, citing tool development and research on GIS effectiveness but focusing on the question of how cognition is affected by the form in which information is presented. We conclude with speculations about the future of GIS in business, including observations on the intrinsic multi-participant and interdisciplinary characteristics of the "geographic organization system " of the future.<>
