Abstract :
During the process of constructing an opencast mine and its outputting, the surface earth stripping is an important task. From the digging of the pit to the exhausting of the mineral, the earthwork is an important factor to measure the work quality all the way. The traditional way of calculating earthwork is spot measurement and three-dimensional coordinates, which has low efficiency in collecting data and cannot best describe the surface of the structures and entities requiring numerous data due to the long working time of the intricate ground. Besides, the method of applying optical photography and software to simulate and deduce the data and image in order to obtain three-dimensional data model of the objects, is complicated in operation and has relatively large errors as well as instability. Thus, the traditional method can no longer satisfy the need of modern opencast mining. With the emergence of the three-dimensional laser scanning technology and devices which have the advantages of obtaining mass data rapidly, high accuracy and simple calculation, earthwork calculation based on three-dimensional laser scanning technology has thus become the effective approach for opencast mines.
