  • Abstract
Summary form only given. Fastwave devices, and in particular, gyro-devices are capable in principle ofproducing quantities ofpower in the millimeter wave bands which far exceeds that producible by conventional slow wave linear-beam devices. Gyrotron oscillators have been in development for decades as efficient sources of high power millimeter waves for such applications as the electron cyclotron heating of fusion plasmas and material processing. Amplifiers based on the electron cyclotron maser or gqrotron interaction have also been studied for comparable times. Building on the excellent work during the past several decades, recent progress in the research into new gyro-amplifier concepts as well as the realization of high average power gyro-klystrons has been particularly exciting. This talk will serve to provide a quick review of the past work, the present development activities towards high average power devices, and the exciting opportunities afforded by new concepts for gyro-amplifiers.
