Abstract
A method for generating Lyapunov functions that is useful for determining the stability criterion of second-order nonlinear autonomous systems is developed. The idea is based on varying slopes in the phase plane. These slopes define the phase trajectories of the nonlinear system. The method is very simple compared with existing methods. Several examples illustrate this point
