Abstract
The notions of D -characteristic equations, essential D -eigenvalues, and S 1 and D 1 canonical forms for vector and scalar linear differential equation (VLDE and SLDE) operators are introduced. Using the notion of D -similarity, an important relation between the vector operator and the SLDE operator is established, and an explicit procedure for reducing a VLDE operator to an SLDE operator via D -similarity transformation is derived
