Abstract
As the thermal performance of elements of porcelain-housed metal-oxide surge arresters varies greatly depending upon contamination of the insulator surface, it is important to establish a rational pollution testing method for porcelain-housed arresters. The authors have conducted pollution tests on three types of two-unit porcelain-housed metal-oxide surge arrester for 275 kV power systems. These tests includes two slurry test methods, conducted under the condition of equivalent salt deposit density, which are in approximate in compliance with JEC-217-1984 and one slurry test in accordance with IEC-60099-4 Annex F. The leakage current pulses and quantity of electricity on the insulator surface and element and temperature of element at the time of the tests were measured. This paper describes the test results and analyzed results of the temperature rise of the elements under artificial polluted conditions
