Abstract :
A 420 kV-63 kA single break gas circuit breaker (GCB) has been developed. The authors show the steps to develop new interrupting chambers and circuit breakers by using various techniques. At first two interrupting chamber models are considered and investigated. According to the test results, the basic dimensions of the interrupting chamber for development purposes are determined. Pre-series CBs are manufactured, confirming that the breaker can produce a pressure rise in the puffer cylinder (ΔP) as predicted by calculation and can interrupt short line fault (SLF) currents. The driving energy is confirmed to be sufficient by conducting asymmetrical 100% bus terminal fault (T100a) current interruption tests. A GIS layout with the above-mentioned single break GCB can reduce the installation area by half, compared with the existing two break GCB
