Abstract :
The research program for the DIII-D tokamak has been expanded to include experiments using deuterium plasmas and deuterium neutral beams. In the absence of additional shielding, the increased radiation levels associated with these experiments are calculated to exceed the DOE (US Department of Energy) guidelines of 20 mr/yr above background at the site boundary. To minimize overall exposure, a shielding system has been installed at the DIII-D facility to completely surround the machine pit area inside the building. The design and building modifications of the shielding system are presented. The roof systems, roof drive system, the shield walls and their installation, and the shielding doors are described
