Abstract :
Increasingly, enterprise computing applications have been shifted from the proprietary computing platforms, such as distributed computing environments and applications coded in C or Fortran, to the web-based Internet computing platforms, such as web client/server computing applications coded in Java. It is vitally important to investigate and understand these changes and choose the proper computing architectures and technologies for the specific application needs in industries in order to become successful. In this research, we have developed several client/server computing projects with a variety of multi-tiered architectures and Java technologies to explore the development and performance issues. The Java technologies such as applets, servlets, JDBC, JSP, and EJB were implemented in different environments to study the issues of system and programming requirements, scalability, reliability, interface design, and efficiency. The guidelines resulting from our research will be valuable in designing enterprise computing using Java technologies for industry applications
