Abstract :
An efficient, reliable and fault tolerant operation in automotive fuel cells depends largely on the performance of auxiliary fans and compressors used in their architectures. In addition, to obtain a compact solution, it is preferred to operate these adjustable speed drives at super high speeds. Considering the current intensive nature of the application under a 42-volts electric power design, development of adjustable speed motor drives with such characteristics becomes a determining factor in the overall success of the fuel cell driven vehicles. The present paper explores the suitability of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives for this strategic application. Various aspects in reference to design and sensorless control of SRM drives at super high speeds are presented in detail
