Abstract :
We survey the state-of-the-art with regard to industrial information technology. After a brief review of what the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society is doing in its new Technical Subcommittee on Industrial Information Technology, we review both the practical and the research opportunities in this relatively new but fast-growing sector of the marketplace. We discuss progress with respect to Internet architecture in support of remote monitoring and control, with examples of each: Java programming; multimedia; multicast; network edge services; wireless data access; and data privacy and security
