Abstract
The identification of hazardous locations relative to electrical apparatus is just as important where combustible dusts are handled as it is where flammable gases or vapours are used. The background to area classification for dust risk situations, and the differences from the gas/vapour situation is discussed. The development of zonal definitions is covered in relation to moves towards international standardisation. The practical application of the procedure is discussed and illustrated by typical examples
