Abstract :
One important cause of energy waste in networks is over-provisioning: this paper presents novel necessary and sufficient conditions which can be employed for dynamically adapting network provisioning capacities when performance indicators fluctuate. We develop a novel formulation, based on the application of a theorem by Greenberg, demonstrating how the dynamic detection of over-provisioning in a network can be turned into a simple multiplication of a vector of fluctuating performance indicators by a statically pre-computed matrix. This paper introduces the theoretical foundation and demonstrates its application to a multicast problem, showing a reduction of 9% in performance demand for a videoconferencing case study.
