In this paper, a dynamic peak power compensator (PPC) applied to distribution networks is proposed. The proposed compensator is an IGBT based shunt PWM converter coupled with a battery energy storage system, it can utilize battery to achieve multipurpose including assist power source for providing part of active power that the customer impose on the utility, balance active or reactive power taken by unbalanced load, and thus make the customer a good qualified load seen from utility side. Also, it can support customer voltage for a short term like uninterruptible power supply during system outage. Simulations were carried out to verify the construction and control strategy of dynamic peak power compensator for peak power compensation.
