Abstract :
A new technique is described for using the back-face of a monolithic chip to realise microstrip patch antennas, with feed-lines on the front-face using the thin-film microstrip (TFMS) transmission-line medium. Through-GaAs via-holes are used to interconnect the radiating elements and the TFMS feed lines. The design and performance of a single 35 GHz prototype monolithic rectangular patch antenna is described. The technique can achieve high packing density and provides an attractive means of integrating antennas into millimetrewave monolithic circuits.
