Aerial survey has developed its approaches and techniques over the past one hundred years so that it now integrates the results of reconnaissance with interpretative, analytical and extensive surveys. This short paper introduces the background to English Heritage´s aerial reconnaissance surveys and National Mapping Programme (NMP) and explores the current expansion of aerial survey in Europe
