Abstract
In 1998, the Yangtze River registered the biggest flood in a century; this killed more than 3000 people, destroyed most of the residential areas and industrial sites within the flooding region, and caused more than 200 billion RMB yuan in economic loss. In this paper, NOAA-AVHRR data is used for monitoring the flood. During the flooding period, about 80 usable images were processed. The course of the flood development is presented, and the causes of the flood are also analyzed in this paper
