An Ontology-Based Knowledge Management Approach for E-Learning System

Nowadays, with the fast popularization and development of the WWW, more and more people are interested in e-learning via web. There are many e-learning systems now; these systems provide some simple tools to manage and search a lot of teaching materials. However, the traditional teaching materials base neglects to integrate semantic and concept teaching knowledge, it is impossible for all participants to effectively search and share valuable teaching knowledge to satisfy the teaching and learning demands in e-learning. Ontology technology and knowledge management (KM) are the popular technology, they play more and more important roles in development of information system. So this paper integrates ontology technology and knowledge management into e-learning system so that users can easily and conveniently organize, share and reuse knowledge during e-learning. This paper performs the following tasks: (1) introduction e-learning system, ontology technology and knowledge management; (2) presentation of an architecture for e-learning system integrated ontology technology and knowledge management (EL-OKM); (3) discussion of knowledge ontology construction; (4) implementation of a simple prototype system; (5) conclusion and expectation of the further work.
