Abstract :
In March 1996, NTT Mobile Communications Network, Inc. (NTT DoCoMo) initiated the N-STAR mobile satellite communications service, the goal of which is to complement the terrestrial cellular system service areas and expand the service areas for maritime communications systems. This new service features a dynamic channel assignment scheme, integration with terrestrial cellular systems, and a point-to-multipoint transmission scheme. This paper describes these features, an overview of the system, system architecture, and major system parameters. Furthermore, an overview of several kinds of mobile terminals is described
