Abstract
In color scanned topographical maps, residential areas portray the size and shape information about residential areas, which are polygonal features filled with hatched lines. This paper proposed using Gabor filters to detect hatched lines by their texture features and find the candidate residential areas firstly. And then the traditional curve tracking, linear interpolation and geometrical emendation algorithms are employed to extract the correct contours of residential areas. Experimental results on three representative samples demonstrate the validity and practicality of this method.
