Abstract :
Due to legal requirements and an increasing decline in the population in Germany every mining company is obliged to build up a monitoring system for the planning and running of the mining activities. For the one existing hard coal mining company "Deutsche Steinkohle AG" (DSK) beneath an accurate "Digital Terrain Model" (DTM) the most important information that is needed is about the biotopes and the actual land cover together with its actual status. Today this data normally are generated by manual interpretation of aerial photography, lots of mapping work in the field and a data analysis using Geographic Information Systems. With regard to effectiveness and economy DSK started to evaluate new methods of data taking and data processing by using modem remote sensing techniques
