  • Abstract
A new estimation scheme and an algorithm have been developed for location registration in mobile communication systems. This scheme evaluates location registration algorithms on the basis of paging failure rate for arriving calls. The point is that the estimation scheme must take account of the quality of service recognized by the subscribers. A new location registration algorithm has also been developed. This algorithm makes good use of the time lag between the traffic peaks of paging and location registration, and works dynamically as follows: location areas (LAs) grow larger under excessively high location registration traffic, and break up under excessively high paging traffic. Finally, it is shown that the proposed algorithm improves the paging failure rate by 40% during rush hour periods and has the same failure rate in the daytime when each LA consists of 1 radio cell
