Abstract :
The challenges that face vacuum system design for high-intensity synchrotron light sources and for high luminosity e/sup +/e/sup -/ colliders are explored. Many of these challenges are common to the two types of storage rings. Constraints on beam-gas-induced detector backgrounds produced in the interaction region (IR) influence not just the vacuum system but the optics and the geometry of the IR. Experience gained by several groups is discussed, and some of the solutions used in synchrotron light sources are presented.<>
