Abstract
This paper describes a novel alternative approach to the current mechanism for checking of lane signalling used on Motorway Traffic Management Systems. Under the proposed approach, the display, or aspect, is checked using image processing routines. The paper describes the initial concept, a research phase carried out in partnership with University of Manchester, and subsequent prototype development by a specialist systems contractor. The work is being carried out to enable the concept to be demonstrated to the Highways Agency who in turn will consider if and how this could be applied to future systems.
