Abstract :
The paper presented a method to optimize the excitation coils in the electromagnetic flowmeters (EMFs). The optimized coil size was obtained by minimizing the standard deviation of the induced voltage for different asymmetrical flow profiles. The voltage detected between the two electrodes was calculated based on the weight function. A pair of parameters, i.e. circular span angle and axial length, was selected as the optimized parameters of the excitation coils. The optimization was then implemented with different values of the parameter pairs. As a result, the parameter pair that leads to the minimum deviation of the induced voltage for different asymmetrical flow profiles was selected for the optimized coil. The model of EMF with diameter of 150mm was established. The results showed that the EMF composed of the optimized coils was less sensitive to the flow profiles than the EMF composed of the un-optimized ones.
