Abstract
This paper covers the current situation in the marine industry with regards to software in programmable electronic systems, their application and regulation. It will enlarge on the current processes applied by Lloyd´s Register in the marine industry and outline challenges facing the long-standing classification process and will look at a possible alternative approach better suited to this rapidly changing environment based on a systems engineering approach.
