Abstract
Information about primary users (PUs) location is very important in cognitive radio networks (CRNs) as it can be used to avoid harmful interference to the primary users, while be exploited to improve the spectrum utilization at the same time. In this paper, a survey of range-based localization methods is presented for secondary users (SUs) in CRNs to estimate the locations of the PUs. The differences between traditional networks localization and cognitive networks localization are discussed, several parameters that affect the performance of the range-based localization are studied, and the future of range-based localization is predicted.
