Abstract
An effective strategy of platform-based product family design needs to carefully balance between platform commonality and its incurred over-designs. It is further argued that a feasible design of product platform is constrained by the coupling scenario of the baseline architecture in realistic applications. This work attempts to present a generic framework capable of handling the optimal design problem of hierarchic platform under coupled baseline architecture. Flexible commonalities are applied to the involved components, and scenarios of coupling and interfacing are analyzed to identify the hidden cost drivers of the product family.
