Abstract :
The demand for ever enhanced services and performance from modern railway rolling stock, together with the increasing application of "unmaintainable" technologies, will result in an increasing proportion of maintenance activity being devoted to "casualty repair" to the point where this may well dominate the maintenance work load. Maximisation of service and minimisation of maintenance resource will only be achieved by application of statistical methods to the maintenance process. Such methods will only be effective if accurate service performance data is collected and employed by both designer and user
