Abstract :
With rapid and continuous advancement in IC technology, it is now possible to pack a wholly contained electronic system onto a single chip. These chips termed Systems on Chip (SoC) not only integrate processor cores and memory, but call for much higher level of integration where specialized IP cores communication peripherals, and bus interfaces interact in order to function as a complete system. This paper provides an introduction to SoC design, followed by a discussion of two specific designs from Philips Semiconductors. Finally, the future course of work and some research ideas are analyzed.
