  • Abstract
    Fast ignition inertial fusion energy is a relatively new concept in which targets are separately compressed and ignited. Compared to central hot spot ignition, this approach results in substantially higher target gains, and relaxed driver and target specifications. If the concept proves viable, these changes allow construction of a much more attractive power plant. The high gain lowers the cost of the compressor drivers; the relaxation of other specifications allows thick fluid jets for wall protection, a simpler target factory, and easier target injection
